Burlington Taxi Zones & Fares, w/Map
The following was faithfully copied from last years(2008) City of Burlington, License Certificate for taxi’s. We will update as soon as possible following the completion of re-licensing, which is running behind schedule this year.
- Zone 1 - Shall be bounded on the north by North Street extended westerly to the shore of Lake Champlain; on the east by North and South Prospect Streets by including Robinson Parkway and Henderson Terrace and including all of North Prospect Street and on the west to the shore of Lake Champlain; on the west by the shore of Lake Champlain. Any property fronting upon the above mentioned streets shall be considered to be in Zone 1.
- Zone 2 N – Shall be bounded on the north by the northerly terminus of the Burlington Beltline Phase IV as extended easterly and westerly; on the east by the city limits; on the south by Zone 1 and the north side of Main Street; on the west by Lake Champlain.
- Zone 2 S – Shall be bounded on the north by the south side of Main Street; on the east and south by the city limit; and on the west by Lake Champlain.
- Zone 3 – Shall be bounded on the north by Tracy Drive as extended easterly, and westerly to the Vermont Railroad right-of-way, thence turning to the south and proceeding along such right-of-way to a point, which point shall be the north line of Woodbury Road as extended westerly, of the so-called Thibault Development and the so-called North Park Development to the east of North Avenue shall be consided to within Zone 3; on the east by the city limits; on the south of the northerly boundary of Zone 2N and on the west by Lake Champlain. Any property fronting upon the above mentioned streets shall be considered to be in Zone 3.
- Zone 4 – Shall be all of the City of Burlington located to the north of the northerly line of Zone 3.
Fares Generally
The authorized taxicab fares for transporting passengers within the city shall be as follows:
(a) Within Zone 1: Up to Six Dollars and No Cents ($6.00).
(b) Within Zone 1 to Zone 2N or 2S or Vice Versa: Up to Seven Dollars and Ninety Cents ($7.90).
(c) Within Zones 2N and 2S Up to Seven Dollars and Five Cents ($7.05).
(d) Between Zone 1 and Zone 3: Up to Nine Dollars and Twenty-five Cents ($9.25).
(e) Within Zone 3: Up to Seven Dollars and Fifty-five Cents ($7.55).
(f) Between Zone 3 and Zone 2N: Up to Seven Dollars and Fifty-five Cents ($7.55) except to Nine Dollars and Seventy-five Cents ($9.75) for a fare transported between Zone 3 and Zone 2S.
(g) Within Zone 4: Up to Eight Dollars and Sixty Cents ($8.60) except up to Eleven Dollars and Forty-five Cents ($11.45) for a fare transported between Zone 4 and Zone 1 and except up to Thirteen Dollars and Twenty Cents ($13.20) for a fare transported between Zone 4 and Zone 2S.
(h) For each additional passenger on an exclusive ride, not including the first passenger, picked up or delivered in any of the preceding zones, a One Dollar ($1.00) charge per additional passenger may be collected.
Waiting Time, computed from the time waiting commences, shall be charged at the rate of thirty cents ($.30) per minute, except that no charge shall be made when waiting time does not exceed five (5) minutes.
No Taxicab operator whose services have been engaged by a single passenger shall pick up any additional passengers without first asking and receiving permission from the person who has engaged the services of such taxicab operator.

By the way, should you actually read the Zone descriptions above, the incomplete instructions are not our doing. Ask any Operator to see their License Certificate -every Burlington licensed taxi is required to have one- and see for yourself.

Where the weekly Seven Days came up with this map, we don’t know but we thank them. What we can tell you, is we’ve yet to meet a single taxi Operator who has ever been provided this Zone Map. None of which is surprising if you know that the City of Burlington does not provide prospective drivers the complete rules they must abide by, before licensing them.
